When to consider working with a fertility consultant
When Should You See a Fertility Specialist?
Starting a family is one of life’s most exciting and emotional times. It begins with hope, excitement, and dreams of what the future will hold. But when conception doesn’t happen as expected, feelings of uncertainty, worry, and frustration can creep in. If you’ve found yourself wondering when it’s time to consult a fertility specialist, know that you’re not alone. Understanding the signs and knowing when to seek help can make all the difference in your path to parenthood.
Key Milestones to Look Out For
When trying to conceive, it’s important to recognize when it may be time to seek additional support. Here are some of the key indicators:
Time Trying to Conceive
- If you’re under 35: Usually healthcare providers will tell you to try to conceive for 12 months before seeking any treatment but I disagree with this. I think it is really helpful to work with a fertility consultant to help identify any red flags before this starts becoming a more stressful situation. If your workup looks perfect, great! Give it some time. But when we find red flags, I think they need to be addressed so that we do not prolong any issues. Also, know your body. If you feel a little off or feel like you have been TTC for a while and nothing is helping, lets chat today!
- If you’re 35 or older: If you are over 35 I recommend working with a fertility consultant at the front end. Again, if there are any red flags we want to address this ASAP and not wait 6 to 12 months to start making changes. Often by the time you realize something is wrong, 2 years have gone by and the window for getting pregnant naturally can really decline more rapidly.
- TTC status- When they tell you to try to conceive for 1 year 6 months, this does not take into consideration those of us who may be already tracking and having intercourse on specific days. If you have been trying for a while based on data such as basal body temperature ovulation prediction kits and still not getting pregnant, this may warrant a deeper understanding of why you have not gotten pregnant.
Irregular Menstrual Cycles
If your periods are irregular—or absent—it could be a sign of ovulation issues, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or hypothalamic amenorrhea. Both can significantly impact your ability to conceive, and addressing these issues early can save you time and emotional energy. A fertility consultant, like myself, can help get your cycles back on track and make it easy to get pregnant when you’re ready.
Known Medical Conditions
Certain health conditions can interfere with your ability to conceive. These include:
- Endometriosis, which can cause scar tissue and inflammation that affects the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or uterus.
- Thyroid disorders, which can disrupt the delicate hormonal balance required for ovulation.
- PCOS affects hormone levels, ovulation and can be managed without needing IVF
- Pelvic infections or surgeries that may have led to scarring or blocked fallopian tubes.4
- Autoimmune disorders cause generalized inflammation which needs to be managed tightly when trying to conceive
If you have a known medical condition that could impact your fertility, it’s wise to seek advice even before you begin trying to conceive. Early intervention can help avoid unnecessary delays.
Recurrent Pregnancy Loss
Experiencing multiple miscarriages can be devastating, both physically and emotionally. A fertility specialist can help uncover potential causes, such as chromosomal abnormalities, uterine issues, or hormonal imbalances, and create a plan to support a healthy pregnancy moving forward.
Why Timing Matters
Seeking help from a fertility specialist sooner rather than later can be empowering. Many people delay out of hope or fear, but time is often one of the most critical factors in fertility. Whether it’s addressing a specific health condition or considering advanced options like IVF, early intervention increases your chances of achieving a successful outcome.
What to Expect During Your First Visit
Taking the step to consult a fertility specialist can feel overwhelming, but knowing what to expect can ease your mind. Your first visit is all about understanding your unique situation and laying the groundwork for a plan that suits your needs.
Detailed Medical History
The initial consultation will start with a comprehensive review of your medical history. This includes:
- Your menstrual cycle patterns
- Any previous pregnancies or miscarriages
- Lifestyle factors, such as stress, nutrition, and exercise habits
- Family history of medical conditions
- Inflammation assessment
- Lab work, imaging, ultrasounds, semen analysis etc.
This discussion will help your specialist identify any potential areas of concern and guide the next steps.
Initial Testing
To gain a clearer picture of your reproductive health, your doctor may recommend a series of tests, including:
- Bloodwork to assess hormone levels like AMH, FSH, and thyroid function.
- Ultrasound to evaluate your ovaries, uterus, and any structural abnormalities.
- Semen analysis for your partner to assess sperm count, motility, and morphology.
These tests provide valuable insights into what might be affecting your fertility and help shape a personalized approach to care.
Personalized Plan
Based on your history and test results, your specialist will work with you to create a tailored plan. This may include:
- Lifestyle modifications, such as dietary changes, stress management, or tailored exercise routines.
- Medications to regulate ovulation or address hormonal imbalances.
- Supplementation based on underlying health issues, lab work results, etc.
- Natural Optimization Ovulation confirmation, pinpoint best conception times, toxin avoidance
- Advanced treatments- IUI or IVF if absolutely necessary as a last resort
At this stage, you’ll also have the opportunity to ask questions, voice concerns, and discuss your hopes and expectations. Remember, this is a partnership—your input is just as valuable as the medical expertise guiding you.

Common Myths About Seeing a Fertility Specialist
Myth 1: “It’s too soon to seek help.”
Reality: If you’ve hit the milestones mentioned earlier, it’s never “too soon.” Early intervention often leads to better outcomes.
Myth 2: “Only people doing IVF see fertility specialists.”

Myth 3: “It’s my fault I’m not getting pregnant.”
